Note: While the USDB Sales Store website and the items for sale are truly awesome, the US government has placed restrictions on the audiences that are authorized to shop from this store. While this post is not intended to encourage you to shop, if you choose to do so, please review the terms for authorized customers before attempting to place an order.

It’s here! It’s arrived! If you’ve kept up with my Twitter and Instagram shenanigans over the last few months, you probably already know we’ve had some big projects in the works. I’m so very excited to say that we’ve added the USDB Sales Store website to the MARKETMOX digital family!

Just launched! Don't miss this incredible peek inside the USDB Sales Store website. Brand new from @marketmox!

The USDB Sales Store was a pretty special beast in many ways. For years, the store has functioned as a brick-and-mortar shop in Fort Leavenworth. It’s only presence online was a 400-page PDF through which you could browse products and complete a paper order form. It was time for an update without a doubt, but they faced some pretty stellar challenges:

  • The product inventory totaled nearly 700 SKUs. While there is no right or wrong number for total SKUs in your store, 700 is a massive undertaking when building a website from the ground up.
  • All data was stored in a large PDF. We would have to move product names, images, descriptions, sizes, pricing and customization options into a new database — manually.
  • New product photography was needed for at least 250 products.
  • The team using the online store did not have a developer, so it would need to be built in such a way that they could easily update the site and add new products.

Loving a good challenge — I was happy to work with the USDB Sales Store team to create a website that went above and beyond expectations. We not only solved their problems, but did so with some incredible features while accounting for new additions and growth down the road.

All that data

Just launched! Peek inside the USDB Sales Store website @marketmoxDoing what MARKETMOX does best, we developed a strategy for tackling all that data. With 700 products — all with their own style variations and customization choices — the transition from PDF to HTML wasn’t going to be simple. We took a head-on approach — diving straight into the store’s existing PDF with a system of checks, double checks and triple checks to ensure all items were represented accurately in the final website. Working with another data pro, we added dropdowns for product details, helpful customization boxes and included every bit of information provided in the original PDF.

I can hardly describe the attention to detail that went into accounting for all of that information manually. It was not a task for the weary and took countless hours of mindful processing. Bringing in a fresh set of eyes to ensure everything was meticulously placed was exactly what this projected needed. That’s really where we got to see the MARKETMOX style excel — leveraging the most skillful resources available to make this project rock.

Picture perfect

Roughly 250 items in the store needed new photography. The challenge there was that all items were housed in the shop’s warehouse in Fort Leavenworth. Some were giant. Some were very small. And, did I already mention that there were 250?! It was clear that we would need on-site photography.

Traveling with lights, backdrops and, of course, my camera and lenses — we set up for two days of shooting new product photos at their shop. Being able to transport my gear to the products, really helped to streamline the process for the USDB Sales Store team.

The on-location flexibility was able to fuel the site with brand new product images that truly shined in the final design. To really shine a spotlight on the shop’s amazing creations, we implemented a fun hover action that rotates through the product images while you browse. This little extra detail makes for some really nice transitions that show product detail and extra features without even having to click into the product page!

Simple interface

Leveraging a Content Management System (CMS) on the back end of the website, we were able to set up the database in such a way that managers within the store could update and add new products easily. Without needing to know a development language to make updates, the team can now manage their inventory and online presence with minimal effort.

Room to grow

The jump from PDF order forms to a functioning eCommerce website was a huge step forward for the USDB Sales Store. Now, the team is able measure traffic, see real-time reports on sales and product interest and optimize their inventory to support most popular items. The new website is a fabulous beginning from which there are a number of really cool features that the team could choose to build on later. Being 100% customizable — we can tap into the latest shipping rates, tax calculations, credit card processing services and more to cater to the user experience. Or, we can expand on the internal optimization and add inventory management, advanced order processing and so much more. The list is virtually limitless and incredibly exciting to consider.

What’s more — we can do this for just about anyone. You don’t have to have 700 items in your store to establish a valuable online presence. Reach out to MARKETMOX today to learn more about how we can help get your eCommerce website off the ground today!
